Caernarfon, 1st March 2019. St David’s Day
In the city of Caernarfon a tribute was held to the Welshman Lewis Jones (1837-1904), who promoted and led the first migration of Welsh settlers to Patagonia in 1865.
Led by the Mayor of Caernarfon Eiriona Hughes, Lord Dafydd Wiggley, and Ambassador Carlos Sersale di Cerisano, the tribute consisted of discovering a plaque where Lewis Jones was born.
Also participating in the event were the former British Ambassador to Argentina -and of Welsh origin – John Hughes and his wife Lynn.
In his speech, the Ambassador made special reference to the contribution of the Welsh families in Argentina, who until today managed to preserve their culture, lifestyle, their language, their religion, honouring the courage of those families who embarked on the Mimosa in 1865 and crossed the Atlantic to settle in the inhospitable lands of the Argentine Patagonia.
