Aves Argentinas (AA) and BirdLife International (BLI) presented at our Embassy in London the plan to create the Ansenuza National Park in Mar Chiquita, with the aim of developing a new National Protected Area in the province of Córdoba that contributes to the conservation of global biodiversity.
The project, in charge of Hernán Casañas (AA), seeks a total protected area of one million hectares of wetlands. During the 30th British Birdwatching Fair held last August, the organization allocated 322,000 pounds to the project selected by BirdLife CEO Patricia Zurita.
Mar Chiquita has the largest salt lake in South America, fifth worldwide. Its 500,000 hectares extension is home to a great diversity of mammals, reptiles and amphibians. It contains 3 out of the 6 species of flamingos: James phoenicoparrus (8,327 birds), Andean (18,321) and Chilean (318,010). It is also home to 380 species of birds (38% of the total of Argentina, 85% of the province of Córdoba, 66% of the birds of the Argentine coast and 8% of the world total).
"Argentina has a system of National Parks recognised at a global level. This project combines natural conservation with the diversification of income of local communities in the Anasenuza region, incorporating sustainable activities based on ecotourism and the rational use of the Río Dulce to allow the normal functioning of ecosystems, "said Casañas.
