23rd January 2019.-
On 22 January the Embassy hosted a talk titled "Environmental Protection in International Law over the last 25 years: Perspectives and Prospects" by UK-based Argentine academic, Professor Jorge Viñuales of the Harold Samuel Chair of Law and Environmental Policy, Fellow of C-EENRG and Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge University.
His talk covered the main aspects of the evolution of international environmental law, from the 1992 Rio Conference on Environment and Development up to the present day. Also discussed was the evolution of jurisprudence in international courts and tribunals, negotiations on climate change, in particular the results of the COP24 in Katowice, Poland. Viñuales also mentioned some initiatives currently underway, such as those around plastic contamination of the oceans.
The event was well attended and the Q&A garnered a great deal of interest. Present at the talk were UK Government officials from DEFRA and the FCO, diplomats from the Embassies of Poland, Uruguay and Canada, and representatives from the European Commission Representation to the International Maritime Organization, the consultancy Climate Mundial, Canning House, and academics from the legal field.
